Nuñez

The Mets finally sent down Nick Evans. Unfortunately, they called up Abraham Nuñez to replace him.

I could not have sniped it better myself. You guessed it: a backup infielder. A career 62 OPS+. Totally useless to the Mets.

How is it that Omar Minaya is in charge of baseball operations for a major league team? How is the general manager making such a move not the worst in the game?

Now come and tell me that Nuñez is a major leaguer, while Valentino Pascucci is a quadruple-A player.

Sigh. Nuñez will wear #6.

Nunez, huh? Aint being a Mets fan just grand? Argh...

I don't think Pascucci is on the 40-man, right? Who would you remove and expose to waivers to bring him up?

It doesn't work that way. Pascucci would be added to the 40-man, which has room (and even if it didn't, it has luminaries like Abraham Nuñez on it), and then he would be brought up. No waivers.

First, the Mets were in dire need of infield help. Damion Easley? What a joker!

Second, this is only temporary. Soon Marlon Anderson will return and assume his role as inspirational team leader/backup-infielder-who-also-primarily-plays-the-outfield-also guy.

Thirdly, Abraham Nunez is a model of consistency and class. Have you ever heard "Abraham Nunez" mentioned in connection with a triple homicide? He's a solid major league veteran presence who will add depth and class to an organization clearly lacking in the latter.

Fourthish, this Valentino character you refer to with such admiration should stick to making dresses and hang up the cleats. Who cares if he's hit .874 off lefties with 12 homeruns? He sucks. Get over it.

Omar has found his level.

Saw this from David Lennon, thought it was pretty funny (though I don't think that was Lennon's intention) -

Jose Valentin is getting closer to joining the Mets. Valentin, working his way back from a disc injury, played his second straight game at DH for Triple-A New Orleans on Friday. He went 0-for-4 with a walk and is 0-for-8 in two games ...

Oh, I'd say he's ready now. What's the friggin holdup ?

Another guy who will get a call up over Pascucci. Seriously - do people forget how bad Jose Valentin was last season ? I heard on WFAN radio how important he was to Jose Reyes. (intimating a causal relationship between Valentin's injury and Reyes' decline in the 2nd half of 2007) Well, Reyes is going pretty well right now - so that clearly isn't the case.

You just made the same argument you're denouncing in reverse...
